During the week of June 19-25, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

During the week of June 19-25, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Six of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona, 11.

• South Hilo, seven.

• Puna, three.

• South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 560 DUI arrests compared with 535 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.67 percent.

There have been 675 major accidents so far this year compared with 720 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.25 percent.

To date, there have been 20 official traffic fatalities, compared with 11 at the same time last year. This represents an increase of 81.82 percent. There also have been four vehicle-related deaths police don’t count toward the official total, two of which occurred on private property and the other two in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
